Minister Vijitha Herath announced that Sri Lanka will receive a new shipment of 750,000 passports next Saturday, with distribution set to start on Monday, 21 October.
Speaking at the Cabinet press briefing today (15), he detailed decisions from the recent Cabinet meeting and addressed ongoing legal issues with the e-passport system.
Herath noted that a court injunction currently prevents tenders for the e-passport project, and the matter will be revisited after legal proceedings conclude. He warned that despite the new stock, passports may run out soon, prompting the government to start a procurement process for additional supplies to meet growing demand.
The government aims to prevent future shortages and ensure timely passport issuance through a tender process for regular passports, the Minister emphasized.
