Kamindu Mendis breaks 150-year-old record

Kamindu Mendis made cricketing history, becoming the first player to score fifty or more runs in eight consecutive Test matches since his debut.

This milestone was achieved during the second Test match against New Zealand at Galle International Stadium on Thursday.

The 25-year-old cricketer has become the first batter in the 147-year history of Test cricket to score fifty or more in each of his first eight matches since debut. Prior to this, Pakistan’s Saud Shakeel held the record with fifty-plus scores in his first seven Tests. Earlier, India’s Sunil Gavaskar shared the record with three others, having achieved this in six matches.

The left-handed batsman reached this historic milestone while playing at number five. His unbeaten 51 at the end of day one contributed to Sri Lanka’s strong position, with the team finishing on 306 for three. Mendis’ consistency has been noteworthy, with his remarkable run starting against Australia in 2022, followed by stellar performances against Bangladesh and England earlier this year.
