With the easing of import restrictions on tiles and sanitary ware, the prices of related products are falling rapidly, says the Tile and Sanitary Ware Importers Association.
Its secretary Mr. Shamindra Gunasekara said that due to this situation there has been a revival in the construction sector.
“The import of tiles and sanitary ware was suspended for three and a half years. Import restrictions were imposed due to Covid. After three and a half years, the government relaxed the import restrictions last month and gave us the opportunity to import again. We take this opportunity to thank the government. We have started importing again in the last month. There is. Prices are coming down rapidly. In tiles and sanitary ware. Demand is increasing rapidly. This is a very good sign for the construction sector as well.”
Mr. Shamindra Gunasekara asked the government that if further taxation is imposed on this sector, the price of a tile will increase by 100 rupees again.
“Don’t increase tariffs any more. The local construction industry has collapsed now. If this tax comes, it will increase to 100 rupees. A two-foot two-foot tile comes to Sri Lanka for 450 rupees. Another 550 rupees will be taxed.”
